Elephants once roamed freely throughout Africa; now, they occupy only one-fifth of the continent. However, they are protected in Southern Africa and can be seen in large numbers in Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia. These magnificent animals have a dextrous trunk that contains around 100,000 muscles and wide arching ears that radiate heat to cool the body. Spot elephants in South Africa »

Surprisingly, leopards are one of the most numerous of Africa's large predators but, because of their extremely shy, cautious nature, they are rarely seen. They do not roar, but communicate via load rasping calls. They are arguably the most graceful and elegant of all cats, with unmatched poise and composure. A leopard sighting is a highlight of any African safari. Spot leopards in South Africa »

The rhinoceros has an ancient history, with skin that looks like plated armor from a bygone age. Their ancestors form part of a larger group that was previously distributed across the Americas, Eurasia and Africa; however, only five species remain today. Rhinos cannot roll on their backs because of the elongated, blade-like protrusions on their spines. Spot rhinos in South Africa »

The African lion (Panthera leo) has the well-earned reputation of "King of the Beasts". Lions are the second largest members of the cat family, weighing up to 500 pounds. They are the only conspicuously social species of wild cats, typically living and hunting in prides ranging in size from 3 to over 20 individuals. These prides are regulated by complex social interactions. Spot lions in South Africa »

In general, buffaloes favor grassland, whether it be open, wooded or bushed. They feed and travel most often in the morning, evening and nighttime. Buffalos spend the rest of their time lying in shade, similar to cows in a field, although they likely sleep for only about an hour per day. They are never farther than nine miles from a water source, since they must drink every day. Spot buffalos in South Africa »
